BACKGROUND

Jan 1, 201x

High hopes seems to the theme of my life… “The Great Light of the People.” As the modern world translates my name. How many centuries have I worked this world? How many wonders and abominations of mankind progeny have I witnessed? Yet it was witnessing the crucifixion of one they called King of The Jews that began my fall to darkness. The earth shook and was plunged into great darkness that day on Golgotha’s Hill, even now the pen trembles in my hand as I recall the events…
If only I had left for Rome a week sooner I would have been spared eternity’s spite and viscera.

The next day that spineless governor requested a legionnaire to cut down a man that had hung himself from a tree not a ways off from the Jew’s temple… I should’ve said not I. Beneath that swaying cadaver of that miserable man… his was Judis… how I curse him! When his body hit the dust the jingle of silver did touch my ear and it tempted me so. I found a blood-stained silver piece in his robes and fished it out for myself… I am damned for want of a coin.

Finally a few days hence I was allowed to return to Rome with my brothers-in-arms only for disaster to lay in wait as some wanton mistress in a bedchamber. During camp two weeks from the capital I was beset by a monster of unholy might dressed in a form of pale beauty… Her teeth found my neck as she rode me to the ground like a pack mule. Her grip like iron as my life’s blood flowed from my neck in a fountain of crimson… yet still she was not done with me. Her whispered voice was cold stone at my heart, but honey in my ears as she spoke, “You… I want you…” She opened her wrist with her fangs and pour her vile ichor down my throat like some mad physician’s elixir.

I spent days in agony on the side of the road where my comrades abandoned me. Finally when I had my wits once more I was hunched over the cooling corpse of a poor maiden. I was reviled, I was mournful… but above all I was betrayed and left to die by my countrymen… by my brothers.

The next time I entered Rome it was centuries later at the head of a Visigoth hoard that had come to sack the city under a crimson moon. “Chernobog” my new comrades called me… some deity of darkness and evil from their pantheon. In the ruins of my family home I embraced that title and put the descendants of my siblings to the sword, butchering every man woman and child while bathing and supping on their blood.

For a time after that I had my fill of battle and bloodshed, save for my nightly feeding, and sought to learn what i could from a changing world. The “Dark Ages” black plague, and Spanish Inquisition came and went long before I truly saw war again. During the Second World War a man named Adolf decided he wanted the world to bow and burned down my home. I joined the Allies the next night and hunted down every Nazi I could find. The Thule Society, a group of Satan worshiping fools, gurgled in their own blood thanks to me and before the war’s end I retrieved my long dead comrade’s, Longinus, spear from Hilter’s mantle.

So much time had passed since then and I now sit in my home among towers of metal and glass that challenge Babel’s vainglorious heights. So much chaos and noise have brewed in the Sinful homes of man since I turned to a citizen of the night… mayhap its time I remind mankind of its need for order….
