Thousand an hour? I can do that. He didn&#8217;t bother to tell me it was some secret underground base or anything. But, a delivery is a delivery and there&#8217;s no place I can&#8217;t get into &#8230; just takes a little longer. Maybe I should have let Daimon teach me lock picking or something.<\/p>\n<p>So, there&#8217;s this base, super secret underground thing smells all new. All I found was four people, one guy taking apart a carburetor, a guy in a glass cell and people watching him. Didn&#8217;t find another and I wanted to take a look around &#8216;cuz, you know, curious and stuff. First things first, though. I needed a kitchen bad, I was starving!<\/p>\n<p>Man, they don&#8217;t even have leftovers! I mean, I threw together a half dozen sandwiches, I think I used all the meat and they have these weird mustards. What&#8217;s with the brown seeds? And no American cheese. That&#8217;s just un-American! Soda, okay, a six pack was almost enough. Took a couple seconds to eat then, back to looking around.<\/p>\n<p>Damn, it&#8217;s like a hotel, a government hotel. Shit&#8217;s all the same and the carpet is hard. Okay, I like the wall stuff, what was it, wainscoting? But, seventeen hotel rooms, a storeroom full of all kinds of cool stuff, a boring conference room and medical rooms. They actually got a freezer for bodies. What kind of place is this? Must be a bunch of serial killers living here.<\/p>\n<p>I find this one office, like really cool. Looks like a museum threw up. I found a gun range&#8230;yeah, serial killers. A room full of like combat stuff &#8230; guns &#8230; body armor, that stuff. There was a computer room and a couple other rooms full of stuff, like one was full of boxes of clothes. Must be like trophies from all the bodies in the freezer.<\/p>\n<p>I went back into the garage to look at the cool cars and that guy was cussing at the carburetor so I took it apart for him. You should have seen his face when it just fell apart. I wonder if he needed ALL the parts? So, this weird place with like cells, one guy in it, that was tougher, had to keep moving to stay out of sight but in and out, that&#8217;s me.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s about the time I heard the elevator thing coming down. Maybe this Layla is coming at last. Imagine my surprise when like whole armies of people started piling out of trucks. One guy was wearing armor but he got out of it as soon as the door closed. I figured too many people, I should finish this up.<\/p>\n<p>I popped up next to the armor suit guy and said in a perfectly reasonable tone, &#8220;About time somebody showed up I have been waiting for hours, Who&#8217;s Layla and that guy Ed wanted that carburetor apart I did him a favor. Does he need these you think? Holy crap are you guys a gang or something? You wear that armor all the time? Hey! Was that a big bug or what?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Well, something HAD flown right by my head. Then this guy took a swing at me. No chance he&#8217;d hit, but he didn&#8217;t know that and who punches a girl anyway? That wasn&#8217;t very nice.<\/p>\n<p>I gave him the &#8216;hard glare&#8217; which he ignored, &#8220;I think not slow poke.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Does she always talk this fast? Something about a carburetor?&#8221; One of the girls asked.<\/p>\n<p>I tried the &#8216;frown&#8217; on the tin guy. &#8220;Hostile much? I am just supposed to deliver this to Layla.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I popped away from the guy, he looked pissed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not as hostile over here,&#8221; I said.<\/p>\n<p>Distance did NOT ease the canned beef in the least. &#8220;Sarge,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Was he growling at me? Oh, look a new one. This one actually moved a little faster than the rest, but he was as still as slow frozen molasses.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From San Francisco and it took me nearly an hour!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I stepped out of the guy&#8217;s way. Hmm, he was all army-looking and serious but sorta like a grandfather or something. He was still too slow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m Layla but you need to slow down and repeat what you said,&#8221; Layla FINALLY announced herself.<\/p>\n<p>I gave the slow guy a smile. &#8220;Nice try pokie.&#8221; To Layla I added, &#8220;I am just gonna go &#8230; but you got some cool stuff upstairs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Can&#8217;t understand you,&#8221; the slowpoke said under his breath.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;OKAY!&#8221; I said. &#8220;I will talk very slow for the people in the back rows. I got paid three grand to get it here in an hour and I have been hanging aound nearly that long now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I got this thing &#8230; I never open a package, like a rule, sorta a personal integrity thing. Doesn&#8217;t stop be from being curious, so I watched Layla open the envelope, readed and then look up at me.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That was slow?&#8221; The girl that asked about the carberator said. I grinned.<\/p>\n<p>Layla said slowly, &#8220;Oh, a new team member, guys.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I hooked a thumb over my shoulder. &#8220;So, I got 3000 miles to get home &#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nope you are one of us now,&#8221; Layla said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Get out,&#8221; the guy with the attitude and tin can growled at me again.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;SURE!&#8221; I agreed. &#8220;My idea exactly!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Kurt,&#8221; Layla said.<\/p>\n<p>The guy&#8217;s name was KURT?!
